Chanting Mantras – The Power of the Word

Updated: May 13

In another one of my Musings, "Words have Power," I talked about how vibration and frequency in sound are important. A quick example is music – it can move us and change our moods. Dancing brings happiness to our bodies and helps us release a lot of stored-up energy.

Sound Healing is a strong therapy that uses different healing sounds, music, and sound healing tools to improve your overall well-being. It creates a beautiful experience where all parts of your energy field (body, mind, soul, spirit) are gently and lovingly awakened.  Solfeggio Frequencies use specific frequencies to affect the mind and psyche.  Music can heal as well as change our brain chemistry and affect our emotions.

Science is still catching up to understanding how sound heals, but the current research is promising. A review of 400 published scientific articles on music as medicine found strong evidence that music has mental and physical health benefits in improving mood and reducing stress.

Chanting has been used as a method for centuries to affect our well-being.  Some of the benefits of chanting are:

  • it promotes a feeling of connection to yourself and others.

  • it deepens your connection to G.O.D and with those around you.

  • it creates a powerful sense of oneness during the process of singing or chanting together in groups and in choirs.

  • it will cause the left and right hemispheres of the brain to synchronize.

  • it will help oxygenate the brain, reduce our heart rate, blood pressure and assist in creating calm brainwave activity.

  • it slows down the thinking mind

  • it can induce deep meditative state

  • it produces alpha brain waves to achieve a restful and relaxed mind

Mantra chanting raises your vibration, thus raising the energy within your body and mind, leading to healing, calmness, peace and tranquility. Mantra chanting improves physiological and brain health, reduces stress and anxiety, and helps you get ready for meditation. Mantra chanting supports you in being able to become one-pointed by slowing down your thousands of thoughts,

Yogi Bhajan said, “The tongue stimulates those meridian points, and they in turn

stimulate the hypothalamus which makes the pineal gland radiate. When the pineal gland radiates, it creates an impulse, the entire glandular system secretes and a human being attains bliss”.

Pronunciation is very important in chanting.  There are 84 meridian points on the roof of our mouth, the palate.  Each palate relates to certain points in the brain.  Think of it as the dial buttons.  When you want to call someone, you must dial the right numbers so if you want to affect and amplify your connection to the divine, you must hit the right meridian point on the palate.

The word “mantra” comes from the roots “man”, meaning mind, and “tra”, meaning wave. When you chant, you’re not just making sound. You’re generating a specific frequency through the combined power of your voice, intention, and focus. These three elements are key to effectively projecting your mind’s wave.

The sound of your own voice, especially at varying volumes, can create a range of energetic effects. And when voices come together in song or chant, the vibration rises even higher. Think of angelic choirs, the deep resonance of monks chanting, or the harmonies of sacred music. They all elevate our state of being.

My hope is that through this practice, you’ll come to experience the joy, beauty, and transformative power of chanting just as deeply as I have.

Sat Nam!
