We all live busy lives, have demanding jobs or responsibilities, live in big cities and are constantly bombarded with noise, crowds, traffic – information overload. We have little time to ourselves and rush from one task to another, rushing to fulfill everything on our To Do List.
This frantic pace causes stress and worry as we juggle numerous tasks and fear missing something on our Must Do Today List. Constant worry then creates a lot of tension and stress in your body without you even realizing it because it has become your default position.
The first sign of worry in the body manifests in your tongue. The tongue becomes stiff and presses into the sides of the jaw. You may even clench your teeth and grind your molars. This tension then creates deep muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. The upper back gets very rigid. The chest cavity starts to cave in due to the tension in your pectoral muscles, your breath becomes rapid and shallow, your shoulders stoop.
Stress which builds up becomes chronic and can cause physical and mental imbalances. This is how dis-ease starts - tissues will tense, and the joints will build up deposits that create pain and dysfunction. Your nervous system will be in a constant state of “fight, flight or freeze”, making true, deep relaxation difficult if not impossible. It may progress to insomnia and digestive issues, looping, negative thoughts that create anxiety and more stress.
Train yourself to become aware of yourself - your needs, your moods, your emotions, your thoughts, your body. When you know where you are, then you can determine where you wish to get to – a state of equilibrium, even if only for under 10 minutes each day.
This short, simple meditation is a beautiful way to release tension in the mind and body.
Yoga means union. To achieve a state of union, you need the mind, the body and your spirit or your heart to work in harmony.
Experiment with giving yourself 10 minutes a day to reset your nervous system. Do this meditation every day for 3 days and see what happens. If you feel “better”, go for another 7 days and keep on till you reach 40 days. I promise you; each day will bring surprises.
You will develop a heightened inner awareness, more sensitivity to your own needs, more willingness to bring balance back into your life, greater calm and clarity. Give yourself the gift of 10 minutes of stillness, to reset yourself to face each day feeling more empowered and confident and to end each day in peace and harmony.
